I have an older Ithaca Model 37 given to me by my dad. He had it when I was in my younger years so I would have to assume it to be around 40 years old.
I have only the one barrel for it which is marked FULL. I presume this to indicate the choke of the barrel. On the barrel is the number 284596 that would probably be some sort of part number.
There are no markings to indicate the serial number visible on the receiver. The only markings are a water scene with ducks or geese etched on the left hand side and the same with pheasants on the right.
Doe anyone have any idea of the value of this gun? I presume the lack of serial number may be a problem in the present day Peoples Republik of Kalifornia.
Any info or helpful suggestions appreciated.

dutchman88,
First, Welcome to SGW..................
Second, congrats on having your Dad's shotgun.
Before 1968 there was no law that said a firearm had to have a serial number. Some manufacturers put them on and some did not.
My Gun Trader's Guide list 18 different versions of the Ithaca Model 37.
Prices run from a low of $171 to a high of $717..........not counting the ones listed as Thousand Dollar Grade (they run in the six thousand range).
'Assuming' you have a Standard Grade with plain stock the value runs $171 to $287. However, that is just a number in a book. Value depends on what someone is willing to pay.
Take a look at gunbroker.com to see what others are 'asking'.
Again, welcome.

Hi dutchman88,
Again, welcome aboard. The serial number on older model 37s will be in 2 places: 1. on the barrel, usually on the right hand side of the gun near the magazine tube. 2. on the right hand side of the receiver where the barrel and magazine tube meet.
Also,these numbers should match.

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “ITHACA GUN CO., INC., ITHACA, N.Y. - PATENT NO. 1849982 - MODEL - 37 / 12 GA.-2 3/4 CHAMBER-MADE IN U.S.A.', 'PROOF / TESTED', and 'FULL'. The underside of the barrel and the front face of the receiver are marked with the serial number. The sides of the receiver have simple bird and dog hunting scenes.
Barrel Length: 30”
Choke: Full
Sights / Optics: This shotgun is mounted with a brass bead at the muzzle. The top of the receiver is checkered to reduce glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two piece walnut set with grooved 'corncob' slide handle, capped checkered pistol grip, fluted straight comb and brown ventilated rubber Pachmayr White Line recoil pad. The slide handle has a few scattered light compressions and scuffs with spots of thinning finish. The buttstock has a crack on each side of the wrist, shorter on the left, a pair of cracks coming back from the corners of the rear of the trigger guard and several scattered light compressions and scuffs. There are no chips or cracks not described. The LOP measures 13 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The pad has little to no wear and has hardened slightly with age, in about Very Good-Fine condition. The pistol grip cap has a couple of light scratches. The stocks rate in about Good-plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Oringal
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There appears to be some very light, scattered erosion. This may prove to be stubborn fouling in the bore.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 87% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. The barrel has some scattered light marks, most all of them on the top. The magazine tube has straight lines of operational wear from the slide handle. The top of the receiver has some light scuffing, the sides have a few scattered light scratches. The trigger guard has a few scattered light marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The shotgun ejects out the bottom of the receiver. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is an Ithaca model 37 in a great configuration for hunting or trap, with its 30' barrel and full choke it should be able to put shot on target even at longer distances. The shells eject out the bottom, making this a great option for right and left handed shooting. This shotgun is in about Very Good condition, just starting to show its age. The mechanics are sound and the bore is bright with what looks like very light erosion but may prove to be stubborn fouling. The overall pleasant appearance, especially for a 68 year old gun, and caliber should make this a nice addition to any safe or shotgun collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
CA Legal or CA Private Party Transferable: This C&R eligible shotgun can be transferred in California.
