The Chevrolet 235-cubic inch, straight-six engine was used in many
automobiles from the 1930s through the 1960s. Safe removal of the
engine requires an engine hoist and suitable steel chain. The removal
process can be completed in under an hour with just the hoist, basic
hand tools and an engine lift plate.Difficulty:Moderately

Chevrolet was still cranking out in-line 6- and 8-cylinder engines
when the automaker resumed civilian production of the automobile
following World War II. The small-block V-8 would not appear until
1955. Until then, the 216- and 235-cubic-inch 'Blue Flame' 6 engine
remained the bedrock of Chevrolet power. The Blue Flame engines became
the most popular as Chevrolet produced hundreds of thousands of cars
in the 1950s to satisfy consumer demand. HistoryThe origins of the
Chevrolet 235 engine can be traced to the 216-cubic-inch straight-6
that debuted in 1937. With a low compression ratio of 6.5 to 1 and
generating a modest 85 horsepower, the engine was placed in most Chevy
cars. Power was b

The Chevy 235 was part of the second generation of inline six cylinder
engines that Chevrolet used from 1929 through 1999. Though it had
various sizes, the inline six was classic Chevrolet for many years.
HistoryThe 235 was a bored-out 216 engine first used in trucks in
1941. By 1950 it was being used in cars, and it powered the first
Corvette in 1953. The engine had 150 horsepower in the 1954 Corvette,
but its normal power output was in the 80-90 horsepower range. Chevy
stopped using the engine in the late 1950s, but it was used in Checker
Cabs later in the 1960s.

Adding a second carburetor on your Chevy 235 adds muscle to the stock
six-cylinder engine. The job is not complicated, providing you have
some wrenching expertise and talent for making things fit. The easiest
part is bolting up a dual intake manifold and installing a second
carburetor that matches the original, or installing bigger
carburetors. The challenge is adapting dual fuel lines and dual
carburetor linkage. Pull the old manifold and carburetor off and get a
dual manifold that works with the exhaust headers. Decide on the
engine upgrade you want and use a pair of matching
carburetors.Difficulty:Moderately ChallengingInstructions Things

The Chevrolet 235 cubic-inch inline six-cylinder engine -- successor
to the 216-cubic-inch -- entered full-production during the 1940s and
continued until the 1960s. Identification requires locating and
comparing the vehicle with 235 serial numbers. Any difficulty in
identifying 235-cubic-inch engines is because other Chevrolet
six-cylinder vehicles used the same block and the numbering system
changed in 1954, requiring an alternative decoding process. If the
serial number does not match any found on a listing, the stroke must
be measured.Difficulty:Moderately EasyInstructions Things You'll

In 1941, the first Chevy 235 engine was produced, though it was used
only sparingly in pickup trucks. By 1950, General Motors had opted to
use the 235 inline 6-cylinder engine in several car models alongside
the 'Powerglide' transmissions. It was the Chevy 235 that was used in
the first Corvettes, securing the car's place in American automotive
history. Because GM manufactured the 235 engine widely for 12 years,
all specifications are averaged for basic performance. General

This may look like a daunting task at first glance, but in reality
it's not hard to do if you follow these simple

The number on the pad behind the distributor is the SERIAL #, not the CASTING # (big diff). Someone had just posted a new tip on the Stovebolt page on I.D.ing a 235 or 261 engine by the serial #. Also, read the short article about the 261' they have.
