Vox Serial Numbers

Vox Serial numbers The Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide 2019 - out now! Someone (Jules?) asked me at one time for some serial numbers on some of my VOX guitars. Serial Search Tips When searching for Vox do not include words such as serial, number, key, license, code, etc. Excluding words such as these will result in much more accurate results. Recheck your spelling for Vox just in case, you might also want to try searching without the version number. Off the cuff demo of this fine little amp - no pedals - reverb added on mixdown after recording. Mic a few feet in front of the amp, an akg c1000.Backplate is suggesting this amp is 1963.

This is tricky, Pat.

Vox serial numbers weren't planned out too well, nor is there a lot of information on the rhyme or reason for the numbering that occurred in Britain or in the Italian factory.

It was in late 1964 that the Italian factory began making Vox guitars, while British production of Vox guitars continued simultaneously. It was common to have the same models built in both factories.

Here is one bit of information that seems to indicate that you have an Italian-made Vox:

British-made Vox guitars have 5 sequential serial numbers stamped on the back of the headstock (and later on the neck plates), while the Italian-made guitars have 6 serial numbers that is stamped onto the neck plates.

Yours has six digits, and may I assume it's on the neck plate?

Also, I have seen Italian-made Mark VI's with serial numbers very close to that of yours, but quite lower in the production sequence, so it was speculated that the those were made in 1966.

Because of bad business decisions, production of Vox guitars stopped in the U.K. by late 1967. Italian guitar production, which was controlled by Thomas Organ, continued until late 1969.

I am guessing that yours was produced between late 1967 and 1968, and (of course) in Italy.

Sorry to ramble, I hope this helps.

any dating resources for VOX guitars? I have a 12 string folk electric with
Serial #: 223914, probably made around 1966 or 1967 in Italy. It's in mint condition and was trying to determine the value.

Thanks

There is no reference to VOX serial numbers in the Blue Book to date the guitar. However, do you have any numbers from the components (pots)? These may be traceable through the database.
